Farmology

The problem
Agricultural advice reaches Indian farmers late, in the wrong language, and through people with something to sell. The phone in the field is the only channel that is genuinely direct — and it is being used outdoors, in sunlight, often by someone who reads slowly.
The solution
An interface built for that context: large icon-led entry points instead of text menus, advisories tagged by district so guidance is local, an ask-an-expert flow that accepts a photo when words are hard, and an input catalogue with prices stated openly.
The result
50K+ downloads and a 4.0★ rating across 398 reviews on Google Play — by a distance the widest-reaching product in this portfolio.
01
Overview
Farmology — Pragatisheel kisan — is an agritech app covering crop guidance, soil health, weather, an input catalogue of seeds, pesticides and fertilisers, daily farm tips, video learning, regional advisories and direct expert consultation.
02
Context
This is not a lifestyle app. It is used outdoors, in bright sunlight, on an inexpensive Android phone, by someone whose decision this week affects a season's income. Literacy varies. Data is metered. Trust is earned slowly and lost immediately.
03
Challenge
Every design instinct that works for an urban consumer app is wrong here. Dense text fails. Subtle iconography fails. Clever navigation fails. And the product still has to carry a real catalogue, a real advisory feed and a real consultation flow.
04
Approach
Icon-led entry points sized for a thumb and readable at arm's length. Advisories tagged with district and time, so guidance is visibly local and visibly current rather than generic. The ask-an-expert flow accepts an image, because a photograph of a diseased leaf is easier to send than a description of one. Prices on inputs are stated plainly — the fastest way to be trusted is to be the one place that does not hide them.

What I did
- 01UX flows: crop guide, soil health, weather, catalogue, advisory, consultation
- 02Interface design across the app's core screens
- 03An icon and colour system legible in direct sunlight
- 04Store listing design — screenshots, feature graphic and listing narrative
- 05Patterns for low-literacy and low-bandwidth conditions
Live
See it working.
This project is live. The best version of any case study is the product itself.
